How to do well on your presentations

This is what you should do for your presentations.

* All members should talk a little. The presentation should be divided between all members.

* You should not read your presentation. You don’t have to completely memorize it. You can have small cards to help you when you’re having difficulty. However, don’t read.

* Presentations begin with the group members introducing themselves and their topic.

* Present in the correct order: glossary, text, and discussion questions.

* Explain any pictures.

* Asking questions about others’ presentations can give you a bonus.

* The presentation ends with all people in the class, including the presenters, asking each other the discussion questions.

* Pay attention to others’ presentations.

Because of the 2014 world cup, world cup is a hot topic of conversation these day.

There are no winners in Asia and Africa. But there are many winners in Europe and South America. For example, Spain, Brazil, Italy etc.[1]

Each World cup has a Different ball. The kind of balls are Jabulani, Teamgeist, Fevernova, Tricolor, and Questra. Jabulani means “Celebrate”. Jabulani has 11 color. This 11 color mean 11 player and the 11 languages of South Africa and the 11 tribes of South Africa. Jabulani’s special feature is a new and innovation technology. It is not plain form. It has a 8 solid 3-D panels. These panels are nearly globular shape. And these 3-D panels have grooves that warp around the ball. This grooves enable stable and accurating shooting. Teamgeist mean “Team sprit”. Its speacial feature is nearly similar rectangle. This ball’s color is black and white. Its symbolizes the German uniform. Teamgeist’s leather uses a coating. This effect is excellent rebounding, excellent ball touch, and accurate shooting. Fevernova is a Portmanteau of “Fever” and “Nova”. It’s feature is good repulsive force because of Air bubbles in the outer later. Also, This ball was the first ball with a tango design. Fevernova improves accuracy by improving the air resistance coeffect. It has of a 4 colors white, gold, red, khaki. Gold means Korea and japan power. Red fire image means Engine of grouth. Tricolor means three colors. This is blue, white, red. It is a symbol France’s flag. This is first color ball. Tricolor minimizes air resistance by smoothing the surface. As a result, shooting is faster. Tricolor uses syntactic form in order to increase repulsive force. Questra means that the bubble is injected. Questra has very improved torque and repulsive force.[2]

There are many techniques in soccer. There are two type of techniques. The first is kicking techniques. For example, volley shoot, over head kick, back shoot, rabona kick, and scissors kick. The second is dribbling techniques. For example, cruyff turn, marseille turn, flip flap, heel shoot, and scissors. Kicking techniques are passing or shooting techniques. But dribbling techniques are for controlling the ball and getting past opposing player.[3]

The world cup has many prizes: MVP, rookie of the year, Best goalkeeper, and so on. Forlan and Zidane were MVP in 2010 and 2006. Muller and Podolski were rookie of year in 2010 and 2006. Casillas and Buffon were Best goalkeeper in 2010 and 2006.[4]

Now FIFA’s top ranked team is Spain, No.2 is Germany, No.3 is Uruguay, and No.4 is the Netherlands. Korea is No.31.[5]

Presentations

You will begin preparing presentations today. In my syllabus, I told you that presentations are worth 10% of your mark.

All presentations must have these sections, in this order:

1. Glossary

2. Text

3. References

4. Discussion Questions

5. class #, group #, and group members

Now you will begin preparing your presentations.

Step 1.

Form groups of 3 or 4 students each.

Step 2.

Write down the names of your group’s members.

Step 3.

Choose a presentation date. Each hour will have a maximum of two presentations. If too many groups choose the same time,

then you will settle it with games of “Rock, Scissors, Paper.”

Step 4.

Discuss with your other group members and think of 5 possible topics. Write them down. Do not choose one yet.

Step 5.

Discuss with your other group members and choose one topic. Remember that your presentations should be:

- interesting.

- easy to write about in _English_

- easy to research.

- be good for discussion questions.

Discussion questions are to be about opinions, not facts.

Step 6.

Think of ideas and organize them by using a mind map.

Step 7.

Write your text. As you write, I will walk around the class to all groups. I will give help and corrections. You must write your text in class.

Do not write in Korean and then translate into English. The English will be bad. Write in English.

Do not cut-and-paste from the Internet. (“Copy” = “복사”) You must write it yourselves. Plagiarism (표절) will get you a score of zero/0 on your presentation.

Step 8.

Write three or more good discussion questions.
They should be about opinions, not facts.

Bad –> How many planets are there?

Good –> Would you like to visit another planet? Why or why not?

Step 9.

Choose 5 vocabulary items for your glossary.

Then go to this web-site to find definitions:

http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/learner-english/

Step 10.

Find your references.

Then number your references and put the reference numbers in your text.

Step 11.

Prepare your presentation.

Pictures should be separate from the text (different files).

Pictures should be JPEGs.

Put your presentation on a USB flash drive (memory stick) (Konglish: “USB”).

Step 12.

Upload your presentations.

Here are some examples of model presentations:

You will work in groups to make presentations. Each presentations will have:

1. glossary

This is a list of vocabulary and their definitions. You can find definitions at http://dictionaries.cambridge.org/?dict=CLD2

2. text

You have to write the text yourself. Do not plagiarize (표절). If you do, you will receive a score of 0/10.

3. references

You have to show where you found the information.

4. discussion questions

You have to write three discussion questions. You and your classmates will ask each other these questions and answer them. One question will be chosen for the Final Speaking Exam.

5. class #, group #, and group members

Here are some examples.

http://richardlstansfield.wordpress.com/2009/05/29/illegal-downloading-2/

http://richardlstansfield.wordpress.com/2009/05/29/real-name-system-on-the-web/

http://richardlstansfield.wordpress.com/2009/05/29/university-tuition/

http://richardlstansfield.wordpress.com/2009/06/04/cell-phone-addiction/

We will do this step-by-step.

——————–

Step 1.

Make groups of 3 or 4 students.

Step 2.

Write down your group members’ names down on a piece of paper.

Step 3.

Think of 5 possible topics.

Step 4.

Discuss with your group members and then choose one of the topics.

Step 5.

Think of ideas and organize them by making mind maps.

mindMapFive
mindMap
mindMapSix
mindMapThree

Step 6.

Write your text. Do this together, as a team. I will walk around the class, giving help and corrections.

Suggestion: One person takes notes, and the others help.

How to Write your Text

First, begin at the center of your mind map. Write an introduction to the topic.

e.g. These days, plagiarism is a hot topic of discussion.

… or …

Our presentation is about plagiarism.

… or …

We will present about plagiarism.

Then, go along one of your mind map’s branches. Write about that sub-topic.

e.g. Plagiarism is defined as “taking someone’s words or ideas as if they were your own.”

When you are finished with that branch, go on to another.

e.g. Most accusations of plagiarism involve songs.

Then go further along that branch.

For example, in 2006, the songwriters of Britney Spears accused Lee Hyori‘s “Get Ya” of plagiarizing “Do Somethin’”.

Also, in 2009, some Internet users (called “netizens” in Korea) accused G-Dragon’s “Heartbreaker” of being copied from Flo Rida’s “Right Round.”

When you are finished with that branch, go on to another.

e.g. There have also been accusations of plagiarizing choreography. For example, in 2010, the Korean girl group After School

——————–

Do not cut-and-paste from the Internet. (“Copy” = “복사”) Write it yourselves. Plagiarism (표절) will get you a score of zero/0 on your presentation.

Do not write in Korean and then translate. If you do, the English will be very bad and impossible to understand. Write in English from the beginning.

Write your text in class. Do not say, “We will write it later.” I want you to write in in class because I want to help you, correct your mistakes, etc.

You should have numbers in square brackets (e.g. [1], [2], etc.) in your texts. Information before the numbers should match the numbers in front of references.

Example:

On 2th of October, 2008, famous middle age actress, Choi Jin-Shil committed suicide and shocked many people.[1] The cause of her suicide was depression and It was known that she was hurt by malicious comments on the web. Actually, many Korean sports players, singers and celebrities get emotionally hurt by malicious comments.[2] It’s one of the social problems now. So since the past, there has been a suggestion that Korea should introduce the Real Name System on the web to prevent the malicious comments and encourage the sound netiquette.[3] But introducing it to all of the web sites is difficult actually. Also, opponents of this system always insist that it can infringe on the freedom of speech. Recently, Google rejected to the real name system suggested by the Korean Broadcasting Committee.[4] Google does not require Korean users Real Names in order to upload videos to YouTube.

Step 7.

Write your discussion questions.

Write three or more good discussion questions.

* Good discussion questions ask about opinions, not facts.

* It’s better to have Wh-questions instead of yes/no questions.

(You can add a Wh-question after a yes/no question).

Examples:

How many planets are there? –> bad

Would you like to visit another planet? Why or why not? –> good

Step 8.

Choose 5 vocabulary items for your glossary.

Step 9.

Find your references.

Step 10.

Prepare your presentation.

Typing has to be done in Microsoft Word, Notepad, or Open Office. It cannot be in Hangul, because my computer cannot read it.

Pictures should be separate from the text (different files).

Pictures should be JPEGs.

Put your presentation on a flash drive/memory stick (Konglish: “USB”).

Step 10.

Upload your presentations.

Step 11.

Choose a presentation date.

All members have to be present during presentations.

* You can update your presentation if you want to (as long as it is not too close to your presentation date). Make an appointment to see me in my office, 5남231. Remember that you can always contact me by leaving a comment on this blog site.

* Most importantly, as I told you before, you must not copy (“복사”) or plagiarize (“표절”). Your writing must be your own.

——————–

Making Your Presentations

* All members should be present for the presentation. All members should help present it.

* Presentations should begin with all members introducing themselves.

Then, these three sections of the presentation should be presented in correct order:

1. glossary

2. text

3. discussion questions

Just go over them. Don’t answer them or ask the audience to answer them during your presentation.

(You don’t have to mention your references. They must be in your presentation, but you don’t have to talk about them.)

* Please explain any pictures.

e.g.

“This is a picture of M.C. Mong. He is a rapper who tried to avoid his military duty by taking out his teeth.”

* After each presentation, everyone (including the presenters) will ask and answer the discussion questions.

——————–

From each presentation:

- 3 vocabulary items will be taken from the glossary for Written Test #2.

- 1 discussion question will be used in the Final Speaking Test.

——————–

* Pay attention to other people’s presentations.

(Not paying attention to other people’s presentations can lead to penalties.)

* Asking questions about other people’s presentations is good. It shows that you paid attention, that you understood, that you were interested, and that you want to know more.
Asking questions about other people’s presentations could give you bonus points.

… … …

Don’t be nervous about your presentations. You have done most of the hard work already.

Look at the presenter below.

1. What is he presenting about?

2. About how old is he?

_ Step 4. Think of topics.

Discuss with your group members. Think of five topics.

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

_ Step 5. Choose a topic.

Discuss with your group members. Choose one topic from the five above.

_ Step 6. Make a mind map.

mindMapFive
mindMap
mindMapSix
mindMapThree

_ Step 7. Write your text.

You and the other group members, as a team, write your text.

Suggestion: One person takes notes, and the others help.

————————————————————-

How to Write your Text

First, begin at the center of your mind map. Write an introduction to the topic.

e.g. These days, plagiarism is a hot topic of discussion.

–or–

Our presentation is about plagiarism.

–or–

—————————————————————-

_ Step 8. Write discussion questions

Write two or three good discussion questions.

* Good discussion questions ask about opinions, not facts.

* It’s better to have Wh-questions instead of yes/no questions.

(You can add a Wh-question after a yes/no question).

Examples:

How many planets are there? –> bad

Would you like to visit another planet? Why or why not? –> good

I will put some of the discussion questions on the Final Speaking Exam. So, as a class, together, you are helping to make your own final exam.

_ Step 9. Who will do what?

( glossary, references, typing, and pictures )

Discuss with your group members. Each job must be done. Who will do which job? Decide.

_ Step 10. Glossary

A glossary is like a mini-dictionary.

Give the definitions (meanings) of at least five (5) vocabulary items. You may copy definitions from the Internet. Here is an excellent online dictionary for students of English:

Cambridge Online Dictionary

_ Step 11. References (Where did you get this information? Give the URL. e.g. online newspaper).

Here are some English-language Korean newspapers.
