Illegal Downloading

In Korea, the Internet is extremely popular. At the same time, too much intellectual property (like books, movie, music etc) has been stolen by illegal downloading. After the invention of the Internet, people can download or listen to an entire album, As a result, the sales of records is falling quickly. (The picture shows this.)

This show the risk to download illegally.[1] Free P2P software is often packaged with spyware,
adware, or Trojans, which can threaten your computer’s security. Many of the files available on these networks are not authorized by the copyright holder to be downloaded and shared. These files are illegal. By law, the individual liability for copyright infringement resulting from illegal downloading and file sharing is $150,000 per infringement. Nowadays, illegal downloading is a big problem. but there are no solutions.

Discussion Questions:

1. a. Have you ever downloaded something illegally?
b. How often do you download? (e.g. 10 times per day, once per month, etc.)
2. Should illegal downloading disappear?
3. What’s the solution for illegal downloading?
4. In Korea, we show leniency to teenagers who illegally download, but only once. France has a “three-strikes-and-you’re-out” law (after 2 warnings, their Internet access is cut off).
a. What do you think about these laws?
b. If you are against these laws, why?
5.In America, a single mom was ordered to pay $222,000 for making songs available for download,
and they imposed and additional $150,000 for copyright infringement.[2]
What do you think about these harsh penalties?
