Cosmetic surgery :surgery done to make a person look more attractive.

Ugly:unpleasant or unsightly appearance

Jaw:the part of the skull of a vertebrate that frames the mouth and holds the teeth.

Capable:having ability, esp in many different fields

Hemorrhage: flow of blood from a ruptured blood vessels

Fragile: able to be broken easily

Did you watch the movie ‘Two-Hundred-Pound Beauty’? It’s the story of a woman who had a lot of cosmetic surgery.「1」 According to reports, about 70% of Korean adult women consider it necessary to accept cosmetic surgery. At the same time, 61.5 percent of korean woman aged 25-29 admitted that they had cosmetic surgery「2」

So , we’re here to talk about cosmetic surgery. As everyone knows , cosmetic surgery is a controversial topic in our lives. Likewise, there are different opinions in our group. Here are two views, as follow:

Agree with Cosmetic Surgery

First , a good-looking appearance can make us more confident. So, we can become more beautiful by having cosmetic surgery.
Second, having cosmetic surgery doesn’t mean we ignore inner beauty. We just want to look better. So if we can, why don’t we do that?
Lastly , it can also help us get more opportunities in our lives. We have to admit that a good-looking women can find a job more easily than an ugly woman. I don’t know if you have watched the TV show ‘Ugly Betty’. Betty is a very capable girl, but because of her disgraceful appearance, she was refused many times by companies when she began to look for a job. People always ignore how capable she is,when they meet an ugly girl.

Objections to Cosmetic Surgery

First, beauty is more than skin deep. Outer beauty is lost as time goes on.So inner beauty is more important than outer beauty.
Second, if we want to have cosmetic surgery ,we have to spend a lot of money and time on it「3」.And we still take a great risk. Han Aili almost died once, because during an operation to correct her lower jaw, a blood vessel was accidently cut, leading to a massive hemorhage. After this terrible operation, Han Aili said that she regretted having it very much. , If time can flow backwards ,she would not have the surgery.「4」

Most importantly , it’s so harmful to your health. As everyone knows, after 6 operations, Michael Jackson’s nose became “the most fragile nose in the world”. In addition, as a result of so much facial cosmetic surgery ,his hair follicles had already died. Jackson’s hair, eyebrows and eyelashes had come off , and his beard, eyebrows and eyeliner all relied on make-up.「5」

Actually, there is no right or wrong for the cosmetic surgery it’s just your personal choice. However, if you choose to have cosmetic surgery, then, you must consider carefully whether it’s worthy to you.

Discussion questions:

1. Do you agree or disagree with cosmetic surgery? why?

2. Are you satisfied with your appearance? Why or why not?

3. Have you ever had a cosmetic surgery?

4. Have you seen ‘200 pounds beauty’? Do you mind if your spouse has cosmetic surgery?

  1. When people get plastic surgery, people attack them for it; when people don’t get plastic surgery, they get called ugly or fat. What has this world come to? “You’re either naturally beautiful or you might as well stay ugly,” THAT is what society and the media is indirectly saying. What is true beauty? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but true beauty IS more than skin deep. You might consider your self ugly but someone else will think that you are the best looking person around. You might think you are the hottest person around, but the next person will say you are funny looking. Being beautiful on the inside is what counts in the end. If you get married to a beautiful (on the outside) person who treats you like crap you live a miserable life. They will get old and wrinkly no matter how much botoxs and plastic surgery they get. What beauty will they have left? Now imagine marrying a person who is beautiful on the inside, that beauty will last forever. I think everyone has beauty one way or another. I think maybe if people (especially the media and society) would stop being judgmental, and stop telling us that beauty is skinny people and perfect proportions, every one would be beautiful. Every one wants to be perfect, but what is perfect? There is no such thing when it comes to people as whole. Every one will have a different opinion or will like something different. So to say, to society and the media and other ignorant people out there, there will always be something wrong with you, so instead of focusing on them we should focus on the people who do matter. I think people should wasting time, money, and putting themselves self at risk with plastic surgery. In the end the ones who care (judge by appearance) don’t mater, and those who matter don’t care.
