Chapter 4 : Sapporo Snow Festival in japan

The Sapporo Snow Festival is very famous festival held annually in Sapporo, Japan.
This festival is held during seven days in February.

The Snow Festival began in 1950, when six local high school students built six snow statues in Odori Park. [1]
Nowadays, This Festival became a very world – wide, hilarious festival. This fact can be seen in some example : In 2007, about two million people visited Sapporo to see this festival. [1]

The festival has a lot of citizen’s own participation. Unusually, the japan Self-Defense joined in festival and doing many work for festival.

In 1955, the Japan Self-Defense Forces from the nearby Makomanai base joined in and built the first massive snow sculptures, for which the Snow Festival has now become famous. [1]

In years when the accumulated snowfall is low, the Self-Defense Force, for whom participation is considered a training exercise, brings in snow from outside Sapporo. [1]
