Conversation Starters

Excuse me, I like your __________ .

Could/Can I ask … ?

e.g.

A: Excuse me, I like your shirt. Can I ask where you got it?

B: Sure. I got it at the mall downtown.

Are you a friend of __________ .

e.g.

A: Hi. Are you a friend of Jim’s?

B: Yes, I am. Jim and I work together. How about you?

Could I ask you something?

e.g.

A: Excuse me. Could I ask you something? Do you know the teacher for this class?

B: Yes, I do. My friends all say that she’s helpful.

——————–

Conversation Stoppers

Would you excuse me?

Well, I’d better be going/I should be going.

(It’s been) nice talking to you.

I hope we get a chance to talk again sometime.
