Message for the End-of-the-Semester

Filed under: announcements — richardlstansfield @ 9:05 am

It’s the end of the semester, and here are some important announcements for you.

1. Here are your marks out of 80. They’re after the letter below. Scroll down and find your class. On the left is your student ID number. Next to it, on the right, is your score (#/80).

2. You can see your marks (out of 100) from today (June 23rd) at 5 pm, to June 29th, on the Inha portal site, http://portal.inha.ac.kr. The mark is your mark below (#/80) + your mid-term exam mark (#/20).

3. If you think that there was a mistake, you can ask me to check by leaving a comment here at this blog site. Do not send an e-mail to my Inha e-mail account, because I rarely check it. (My Inha e-mail account is very slow, clumsy, and inefficient, so I hate it.)

4. If you don’t think that there was a mistake, don’t ask for your mark to be changed. See the letter below for more details.

5. If you have a final mark of C or below, you can take the course again.

6. Read this letter.

Dear UE Student:

UE conversation classes are planned and conducted by UE teachers and each student is awarded a score out of 80 in the conversation class based on their performance in the areas of attendance, participation, quizzes, tests, and/or any additional assignments. This score must be curved and no two students may receive the same score. The UE teacher does not directly control the score of the midterm, nor the final letter grade that is awarded to the student. The midterm score (out of 20) is added to the conversation class score (out of 80). The total (out of 100) is evaluated relative to the rest of the students in the student’s track and a letter grade is awarded by UE administration. The UE teacher is not informed of the student’s final letter grade unless an error occurs.

Each UE teacher runs their classes professionally and assesses each student fairly, so there is little point in trying to argue or negotiate for a higher score—most UE teachers increase their students’ raw marks to fit into the grading curve anyway (so final marks are generally already inflated). Under the current relative-evaluation system, ultimately controlled by the administration, there is really nothing the UE teacher can do to change a mark unless an error has been made.

Teachers may share individual raw results with students who would like to know how they did on particular assessments, but beyond that, if there is no formal complaint or error, it remains in the best interest of the student to accept the score that was awarded to them. I hope this helps clarify things for you.

Sincerely,
Mr. Richard Stansfield

  6. Dear. Stansfield

    Hi I’m Jongwon Lee.
I’m really sorry to asking about my point, but i can’t understand my point “B0”.
I thought my written exam and listening exam score was pretty good. (relatively to my friends,,,)
Then, you mean my final speaking exam score was terrible?
If you marked my speaking exam low, can you tell me why?
I think speaking naturally and fluently is a key point in speaking exam.
However, most of students did not speak like that.
They mermorized and read like robot, and they didn’t have eye contact too!
(In examination day, i came early so i saw 3 couples taking exam.)
So me and my partner thought we must not do like that, so we didn’t memorize and read like robot.
We talked really comfortably, having eye contact and enjoy talking all the time.

Considering my hard work for University English Class, i think my score is too low.
    (I was really disappointed,,,)
I think you should reconsider about my score.
Please reconsider about changing my score to B+.

    Bye.

    • First, I don’t give letter grades (e.g. A, B, etc.) I only give a number out of 80.

Second, unless there is a mistake, the grade will not be changed.

Third, here is your raw data:

      Attendance: 8/10

      Participation: 3/10

      Written Test #1: 25/36

      Written Test #2: 20/25

      Presentation: 7/10

      Speaking Test: 25/30

      Raw Score: 57.94/80

      Adjusted/Final Score: 68.5/80

Fourth, I told everyone what I was looking for in your speaking test here.

Fifth, I can give you more detailed information if you wish, but I need access to my office, which I don’t have at this time, but I could do it later.

    • I gave the original attendance papers to the University English office, so you will have to ask them about it. I may have marked you absent for using your cell-phone in class. (It would have an “A” with a small “cell” written underneath it.) I made it very clear to everybody in my syllabus and in class that I will mark people absent if they play with their cell-phones in class.

You lost marks on participation for being passive/not participating/not cooperating and for using your cell-phone in class. I made it very clear to everybody in my syllabus and in class that people should not play with their cell-phones in class. Also, some of your classmates volunteered answers and thus received good participation scores.
