Our presentation is about “the crucible”. The crucible is the name of a book and film.

This story is about sex crimes in Inhwa school.

The principal and many teachers in Inhwa school had committed sex crimes against disabled students for 4 years, from 2000 to 2004. In November, 2005, this story was broadcasted on the TV show “MBC PD Diary” But only two of the many accused had their names publicized. So, people kept having demonstrations demanding the arrest of other accused people.

As a result, the principal was sentenced to 5 years in jail. But the principal appealed and was sentenced to 3 years probation. In June, 2009, author Kong Ji-young wrote the novel “Dogani”. And in September, 2011, the film “Dogani” was released. So many people paid attention to this story and it revealed problems in Inhwa school [1] In 1964 the vice principal maltreated two students and didn’t give any food. So they starved to death. Then the vice principal secretly buried them. This story recently was revealed by a graduate.[2]

About 5 million people watched the film “Dogani”, and so many people paid attention to this story. So this story became a social issue, and many people participated in demonstrations. Finally, Inhwa school was abolished and “Dogani law” was enacted. This law strengthens the punishments of people who commit sexual crimes against children below 13 years old or handicapped children.
