World Festivals

1. Glossary

DRUdgery : Work that is very boring.

MOLLIfy : To make someone less angry or upset.

yEARNing : A strong feeling of wishing ofr something, especially something that you cannot have or get easily.

reCESSion : A period when the economy of a country is not successful and conditions for business are bad.

conSOLE : To make someone who is sad or disappointed feel better by giving them comfort or sympathy.

perCUssion : Percussion instruments are musical instruments that you hit, such as drums.

The Self-Defense Force : The unified military forces of Japan that were established after the end of the post–World War II Allied occupation of Japan

We will present about World Festivals.

There are many kinds of festivals in the world.

We introduce about some of them.

There are mask festival in Italy, tomato festival in Spain, Samba festival in Brazil and Snow festival in Japan.

First, in Italy people wear various kinds of mask on that day.

This festival began in the year 1268, it is held from middle of feburary to march.

Masked people enjoy singing and dancing in San Marco Piazza.

San Marco Piazza and theater Campi proceed th host role plays, dance festivals and musicals.

Mask festivals are very unique so many people praise this festival.

10million people come to this festival, so it’s very crowded there.

In Venice, narrow alleys are full of people.

Most of all, tourists are fascinated by the masks.

The masks are handmade there by they have individuality.

The Venice had a rigid caste system in the 11th century so everybody is equal behind masks.

Masked people have new ego.[1]

Second, we introduce tomato festival in Spain.

In 1945, some young men messed up ‘The Giants and Big-heads figure parade’ so the angry village people threw the tomatoes in market.

After this event, they argued every year so this event is called ‘La Tomatina’.

‘La Tomatina’ is held on the last wednesday in August at a small village ‘Bunol’ in Spain.[2]

This tomato festival has continued for 70 years, meanwhile entry fee is free but Spain is in an economic recession, so the entry fee is 10 euros.

During the festival, the street is messy with red tomato, so window and buildings are covered in vinyl.

According to ‘Javier Basilio’ report, Spain TV program ‘Inforne Semanal’ broadcast the festival so the festival spread throughout Spain.

Thus, participants have increased, finally world tourists joined this festival.

Third, Every year gorgeous festivals are held in Brazil.

Typical of the festival is samba festival.

When the festival is held, about 60,000 of people come Brazil for view the show.

The festival is held in Brazil-liodaejanaeiro and it commonly begins 40 days before easter.

This year the festival has been held from february.9 to february.12.

Specially in this year korean singer ‘PSY’ concert there and made the audience wild with excitement.

Outwardly, This festival looks full of fun.

But the origin of the festival has a sad story.

Black slaves forcibly dragged for drudgery from their hometown.

So after hard work, they sang and danced intensely to mollify their grief from hunger and yearning for their hometown.

That came to be the famous festival, carnival.

The point of the festival is‘Samba parade’ and For hold the parade, there are main load that can hold about 60,000 of people(visitor + actor).

The name of the load is ‘Samba de Lomo’.

In there the players play percussion instruments and actors dance ‘Samba’ with music. [4]

As we saw, the size of festival is so big.

So for prepare parade of the festival, they learn and study from ‘Samba school’.

There are regardless of job or age, many people eagerly practice, decide subject, write the words of a song and make motions. [4]

Sapporo Snow Festival

Fourth, The Sapporo Snow Festival is large winter events in japan.

It was held in seven days in February, and displayed many snow statues and ice sculptures .

this festival was held first in Odori Park in 1950,

wtih only six snow statues made by high school students.

Since then the Festival has expanded, gaining worldwide recognition.[5]

the Self-Defense Force joined in and built the very massive snow sculpture,

for which the Snow Festival has become famous

This Festival has grown to become big and well known of Hokkaido’s winter events.

Sapporo hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1972, and the Snow Festival was

acknowledged around the world through international media.

Every winter, about two million people come to Sapporo to see a lot of snow statues and ice sculptures. [6]
