Instructor: Richard Stansfield

Course Name: English Communication: Pre-Intermediate

Spring 2015, Semester 1

You will put your cell-phones into a bag at the beginning of class, and you will get them back at the end of class. You can also look at your cell-phones

during the break. However, when the break is finished, you must put your cell-phones back in the bag. Anyone who cheats will receive an absense on their

Attendance as well as a severe penalty on their Participation score.

Tablet Computers (eg. iPad, etc.)

You can use a tablet computer (such as an iPad) in class. (I use one myself.) However, you must use them for learning and class work. Do not use them to

play games, chat on Kakao Talk, etc.

Sleeping in Class

Do not sleep in my class. Ever. Anyone who sleeps in class will receive an absense on their Attendance as well as a severe penalty on their Participation

Attendance: 10%

Participation: 10%

Mid-term Exam: 25%

Final Exam: 25%

Other Assessments: 30%

Details of Assessments

Attendance: 10%

Students lose 1% for every hour that they are absent. Being absent for 12 hours leads to a grade of F (Fail).

3 lates = 1 absent

20 minutes late = absent

sleeping in class = absent

using cell-phone = absent

forget pen/pencil, textbook, notebook, or folder = late

* 4 Acceptable Excuses for Absences (all require documentation):

1. went to the hospital

You must have a valid, official doctor’s note.

2. family member died

3. military service (e.g. physical examination)

4. You have a job already (not a job interview or a job offer).

–> You must bring me documents that I can keep. Also, you must take the Mid-Term Exam.

* Unacceptable Excuses for Absences:

– everything else (I do’t care about “membership training” (MTs), school festivals, etc.

* Education majors who are doing a teaching internship must inform me and provide documents

Participation: 10%

Watch the video and tell me: Do the students show good participation or not?

Participation is being active, not passive.

I will carry yellow, red, and green cards. If you receive a green card, you receive points on participation. If you receive a yellow card (bad) or red card

(very bad), you will lose points on participation.

Examples of good participation: doing discussion questions as practice, not as a race // speaking in English // speaking in complete sentences // taking

notes // sitting at or near the front.

Mid-term Exam: 25%

Final Exam: 25%

One of these exams will be a presentation, and the other will be an interview. I will give you more details later.

Other Assessments: 30%

This will include things like tests, homework, writing assignments, etc. It may also include participating on on-line discussion forums or blogs. You will

need to register and do some of this on-line. I will give you details later.

A: approx. 20%
